The Importance of Community During Uncertain Times

By Sean Dodds, Client Success Specialist

I can’t remember a time in my life when there’s been such a widespread sense of uncertainty, and rightfully so. I’ve woken up most mornings during these past few weeks with worries about the unknown, and I think right now we can all relate to that feeling. The source of this uncertainty may be different for us all, but to some degree, it’s palpable.

So, how do I cope with this uncertainty in a healthy way? And how do I encourage and embrace people both near and far from me during these unprecedented times?

Community.

This word is used so often, yet it’s not evaluated in terms of what community actually means. I read something once that really stuck with me:

A community exists due to shared attributes of the people in it and/or by the strength of the connections among them.

We all have shared interests during this time and now more than ever we need to feel connected. It is essential to think of others, understand how our actions support the whole community, and commit to thinking outside of our own self-interest.

To do so, I offer three important ways we can grow during these times in order to build a better, and more beautiful, community:

1. Get your rest

This may sound counterintuitive, but as businesses and restaurants close and we spend more time in our homes, it’s important to prioritize rest. When spending a large quantity of time cooped up in our homes, routines are thrown out the window and we can sometimes forget to actually unwind. Resting can also mean being intentional about spending quality time with family, friends, or loved ones around you. Binge-watch the extended versions of Lord of the Rings or build that huge puzzle that’s been collecting dust on the bookshelf for years. Committing to rest is critical for our mental health, especially when our everyday regimens have been severely altered.

2. Be compassionate

People express and experience fear and uncertainty differently. Be a positive presence, even if it’s from afar, for those in need. Whether it means running out to get groceries for elderly neighbors (while practicing social distancing) or just calling an old friend to check in, proactive outreach goes a long way towards helping others feel less scared. Let’s love people in unexpected ways and let them know they’re not alone. After this is over, all that will really matter is how we treated each other.

3. Encourage Others

Community is deeply rooted in encouraging others, both on an individual and group basis, and letting people know you’re there for them. Positive encouragement within your community empowers others to do the same and creates a ripple effect that benefits everyone. Practicing social distancing doesn’t mean we can’t look after each other. In fact, your community needs you now more than ever. Join a local Facebook or Nextdoor group to offer encouragement online and find new ways you can help your community.

These aren’t radical ideas but are simple actions you can take that have large outcomes. This is how we spread love during these uncertain times.

I feel blessed to be a part of the community here at Asset-Map. We’re different people, with common interests, who are stronger together. If you’re reading this, you are a part of this same community. Please know that we are here for you and I encourage you to give us a call, even if it’s just to check-in, to let us know how everything is going.
